Epic Shelters was looking for a ballast solution for their shelters. The standard products on the market no longer met their requirements. Together, we looked at adapting a standard concrete ballast block. For the larger shelters, approximately 2,000 kg of ballast per anchor point was needed; this ballast had to be spread across 2 blocks (1,000 kg each) so that any forklift could handle them. A concrete forklift block of 160x80x40 was chosen, with 2,400 kg anchors fitted on the end faces. The bottom block has lugs and the top block is smooth (for aesthetics). This ensures the two concrete blocks always connect securely. The tent is anchored to the bottom block. These blocks are also regularly used for smaller canopies (see photo PSV stadium).
In addition, we adapted the standard 80x80x80 ballast block to a height of 90 cm — another custom solution — bringing the total weight to 1,240 kg. The block is fitted with anchors on all sides. For a special type of shelter, Epic needed blocks into which a pole could be inserted at an angle. No problem for us. We applied a pipe recess with a diameter of 150 mm at a 60-degree angle. This special concrete ballast block weighs 2,250 kg (including steel pipe).
Epic Shelters (tent hire) has grown enormously over the years, resulting in a range of 17 different types of canopy — from small chill-out shelters to shield against rain or sun, to full stage canopies of nearly 650 square metres. The company now has more than 200 canopies in stock.
